Jlin MUTEK, Montreal QC, August 24
Published Aug 25, 2019Slotted between sets from Nicola Cruz and Reggie Watts and John Tejada's Wajatta project, by the time Jlin brought her sophisticated polyrhythms to Mutek's only all-night party, the club was packed to the gills.
Unloading heaving slabs of bass like heat waves while spinning freaky donuts around the blasts, the Indiana producer wasted no time transitioning between tracks, foregoing a seamless set for a more economical attack. The crowd wasn't always in step with the angular percussion workouts, but Jlin did win some hearts as she toyed with conventions and traced connective tissue between footwork, drill, drum and bass, techno and dubstep.
In a touching nod to her collaborator, she cued up Holly Herndon's "Fade" for the finale and walked off the stage, the track's ethereal shivers carrying the crowd into a more introspective zone as it played through to the end unattended.
